Tralee Magic Basketball Club is immensely proud to congratulate Holly O’Brien on her selection to the Ireland U20 team — a richly deserved milestone for a player whose journey has been shaped by hard work, resilience, and an unwavering love for the game.
Holly’s story with Tralee Magic began where so many great club stories do: in the academy. Even then, she brought energy and a real appetite to learn. As she grew through the club, she developed not just into an outstanding player, but into a leader young players could look up to. In more recent years, it had been especially fitting to see Holly give back by helping to coach in the academy where her own basketball journey first began.
Her path has not always been straightforward. One of the most disappointing moments in Holly’s development came when she narrowly missed out on the final cut from the extended Ireland U18 panel. For many young players, that kind of disappointment can shake confidence. Holly responded in the most Holly way possible. She kept going. She kept working. She kept showing up. And, piece by piece, she turned that setback into fuel.
That perseverance has been written all over her career since.
Wearing the Tralee Magic jersey, Holly has enjoyed success at both county and national level, playing a key role in teams that have created some very special moments for the club. Last season, as captain of Tralee Magic’s U20 National Cup-winning team, she led with the kind of composure, toughness, and selflessness that has become her trademark. She has long been one of Magic’s most dependable performers, a point guard capable of controlling the tempo of a game while bringing intensity at both ends of the floor.
Alongside her commitment to Tralee Magic, Holly also continued her development while away at college, joining Catalyst Fr. Mathews in the Women’s Superleague environment. That experience has helped her keep growing, testing herself daily, and preparing for the next level, while still remaining closely connected to her home club.
Now, her selection to the Ireland U20 team feels like the latest chapter in a journey that has been earned every step of the way.
At Tralee Magic, we speak often about development, about staying the course, and about what can happen when talented young players are supported by coaches, volunteers, teammates, and family over a long period of time. Holly is a brilliant example of that. Her success belongs first and foremost to her, but it is also a moment of pride for all those who have helped her along the way.
We know how proud Holly’s family are of her and of everything she has achieved so far. We hope Holly knows just how proud we are of her too.
She has represented Tralee Magic with class throughout her journey — as a young academy player, as a teammate, as a captain, and as a role model for the next generation coming behind her. Her Ireland selection is a wonderful reward for years of commitment and resilience, and a reminder to every young player in the club that setbacks do not define you. What matters most is how you respond.
Everyone in Tralee Magic wishes Holly every success in green. This is a special moment for one of our own, and one the whole club can celebrate with pride.
