Final Score: Templeogue 63 – Tralee Magic 53

Tralee Magic’s U18 squad put in a spirited performance against a strong Templeogue side in the National Cup, battling through a game that was much closer than the scoreline suggests. In what turned out to be the final game of their cup campaign, they left everything on the court, demonstrating resilience, tactical awareness, and a fighting spirit that has defined their season.

A Fierce Start

Despite being short-handed, Tralee Magic came out strong, showing impressive composure against Templeogue’s aggressive full-court press, which was in play for most of the first half. Their ability to break through and find offensive opportunities kept them competitive, with the game seeing multiple lead changes (9 in total) and tight exchanges throughout the opening phases. Their tactical awareness was on full display as they adjusted their approach, making smart decisions under pressure and finding ways to counter Templeogue’s suffocating press.

Shooting efficiency kept Magic in the game early on. They were clinical at the free-throw line, making 86% (19/22) of their attempts, and their two-point shooting was strong . However, they struggled from beyond the arc, hitting just 3 of 6 (50%) compared to Templeogue’s perfect 12/12 three-point shooting, which ultimately proved decisive.

Defensive Brilliance in Q3

The third quarter was a standout for Tralee Magic, as they delivered a stunning defensive performance that limited Templeogue to just 10 points in the period. Defensive discipline, strong rotations, and relentless effort kept them within striking distance. The team also showed great rebounding effort, particularly on the defensive end, to deny second-chance opportunities.

Emily Flynn and Priya O’Donavan were particularly impactful on defense, disrupting Templeogue’s offensive rhythm with aggressive pressure and smart positioning. However, despite their defensive stand, Templeogue found another gear in the fourth quarter to regain control.

Templeogue’s Shooting the Difference

While Tralee fought hard, Templeogue’s superior three-point shooting in the final quarter proved to be the key difference. Their flawless 12/12 from deep (100%) was a game-changer, as they stretched the Magic defense and converted crucial shots under pressure. Their ability to maintain a high shooting percentage from all areas (90% from two-point range and 53% from free throws) allowed them to withstand Tralee’s best efforts.
