Lee Strand Magic 70-50 KCYMS
Our u18s played KCYMS on Thursday evening in the county league.
We started strongly with Jamie Burke scoring 10 points in the first quarter to lead our offense.
Our attitude was spot on and our defense which was led by team captain Sean Heaslip held our opponents to 15 points as we led 22-15 at the end of the first.
We maintained our discipline in the second period and with Ryne Ybanez putting on an exhibition of three point shooting we pulled away to lead 47-29 at halftime.
A special mention must go to William O Donoghue whose intensity on defense was infectious and helped create numerous transition baskets for us.
We ran the floor well in the third and extended our lead to 24 points ending the quarter ahead 62-38.
Everybody got a well deserved run in the fourth and all players contributed to a first win in the league with a final score of 70-50.

We travelled to Killorglin for our opening u18 Division 2 game in the County League.
We started very slowly and struggled to come to terms with the strength and height of our hosts. KCYMS shot very well in the first quarter and even though we worked hard our shots just wouldn’t fall for us and we finished the first period behind 21-5.
Although it is against our philosophy we switched to zone defense in the second quarter and it slowed down the opposition’s offense. Our own offence improved against their zone and with good shooting from Sean and Jamie we managed to reduce the deficit to 13 at halftime 29-16.
We stuck to our game plan in the third and increased our defensive intensity holding KCYMS to just 6 points while scoring 15 ourselves. Tadgh hit a few big shots in this period to give us a huge lift and with Tom pushing the ball and William fighting for every loose ball we had a fighting chance heading into the fourth trailing just 35-31.
Jake, Sam, Ricards and Conor Galvin (who is still u16) made huge contributions in the fourth quarter and with three minutes left we had the deficit down to 2 points.
We missed a few opportunities to tie the game and put pressure on our opponents and they kept their composure at the end to make their free throws and see out a 52-45 win.
All our squad are U17s and playing at u18 level so this was a very encouraging performance and will the players on hugely.
This is a development squad preparing for next year and was a very encouraging performance.
Thanks to our hosts and the referees on the evening.
