This week’s Throwback Thursday takes us back to 1 February 2015, when Tralee Magic’s U18 boys travelled to Belfast for the club’s first venture into boys’ National Cup basketball.
Coached by John Dowling and Jimmy Diggins, it was an important moment in the development of the boys’ side of the club. It's a trip that takes on even more significance now when we look back on the clubs history.
At the time, John Dowling told the newspapers about the culture the club was trying to build:
“Our Club is built on a solid rock of dedication, commitment, and an unquenchable thirst for success.”
More than eleven years later, those words still feel very much at home in Tralee Magic. The U16 boys are back in the national league and cup competitions this year. They are also coached by John Dowling who, no doubt, has one eye on the years ahead, just as he did in 2015.
The significance of that 2015 season went well beyond one trip to Belfast. The experience gained by the team that year helped build the competitive foundation for what would become a historic run the following season.
After coming through a demanding National Cup group stage, with notable wins over Ongar Chasers, Kilkenny Stars, Sligo All Stars and Limerick Celtics, the boys made history by qualifying for the final eight national knockout phase.
In December 2015, the squad travelled to Oranmore, Galway, where their run eventually came to an end against a highly rated Maree side. But reaching that stage represented another major step forward for the boys’ programme and showed what could grow from the experience being built season by season.
This Belfast photograph captures a team in the middle of that development — travelling, competing against unfamiliar opposition and learning what was required to perform on the national stage.
As it happens, this Friday, John Dowling will once again travel to Belfast, this time with our U16 National League boys team, alongside David Leahy’s U14 team, for a series of competitive preseason games.
11 years on, we have the same people still giving their time, the same belief in exposing young players to strong competition, and another generation of Magic boys getting the chance to travel, play and develop together.
These throwbacks are about more than remembering old teams and old games. They show how one group creates opportunities for the next, how experience is passed on, and how a club is built over many seasons, not on this year's wins and loses. For 25 years people have been giving their time so our kids can play, develop and make life long connections. That spirit of volunteering is what makes Tralee Magic what it is. The club won't exist without it.
