Across his time with the Warriors, John built more than winning teams. He built culture. His sides were known for their organisation, toughness and togetherness, and those qualities did not happen by accident. They came from hours of work, serious preparation, and a coach who believes that what happens on game night is shaped by everything that happens beforehand. In 2022, that work was recognised nationally when he was named Men’s Super League Coach of the Year, and the Warriors’ own honours list records the 2021/22 double of league and cup under his watch. He kept them consistently among the top teams in the country.
But for us in Tralee Magic, John has never just been a Super League coach.
He is one of our own 💙
A proud Magic coach. A proud Magic basketball dad. A former chairperson who helped guide the club through the difficult Covid years with care, steadiness and commitment. Long before the wider game saw the success on bigger stages, John was already giving his time, energy and leadership to Tralee Magic.
While many will rightly speak about trophies, cup finals and big nights, those closest to the game know that John’s greatest impact has always been in development. The Irish Examiner recently offered a good insight into that side of John, describing a coach whose focus quickly turns to grassroots basketball, youth development and how the game can be made better for young players. In that piece, his simple observation — “Our rings are too high” — said a lot about how he thinks: always looking for ways to improve the game for the next generation.
That development mindset has shown up everywhere John has coached. As far back as 2020, the Irish Examiner noted that John had also coached Mercy Mounthawk to All-Ireland honours, underlining that his contribution to basketball in Tralee has never been confined to one level of the game. School basketball, club basketball, Super League basketball — he has given so much to all three.
And what stands out just as much as the success is the way he goes about it. National and local coverage over the years has consistently reflected the detail and edge he brings. Ahead of the 2022 Super League final, John said: “The preparations are at 100%,” a line that says plenty about the standards he sets. Opposing coach Darren McGovern put it even more plainly after a playoff game that season: “John Dowling coached a terrific game and credit to them.” That respect is earned.
That is why this next chapter feels so exciting for us.
Because while the Warriors sideline will look different, our courts in Tralee Magic are about to get a huge lift. Having a coach of John’s calibre back working directly with our boys — shaping habits, raising standards, and passing on his experience — is something that will benefit every young player lucky enough to learn from him. His long-standing involvement in Tralee Magic’s coaching and leadership has already been visible through club updates and coaching initiatives, and now that presence comes back into even sharper focus.
John has given so much over the years to basketball in Tralee and beyond. We wish him nothing but the very best in his post-Warriors life. But from a Tralee Magic perspective, we would be lying if we said we were not also excited. Because having one of our own, and a coach of his calibre, back coaching our boys is something very special.
Welcome home, John 💙
