Tralee Magic u16 Girls AICC 2024
Tralee Magic's u16 Girls finished off their season in style in Gormanstwon All Ireland Club Championship 2024. Heading into the weekend Kerry Area Div 1 League and Cup Winners The girls were already having a sensational season.
Tralee emerged from Saturdays group games with 3 wins from 3 and top of their table with a 26-point winning average.
Qualification secured for the Premier Division on Sunday morning placed Tralee in the top 8 u16 club teams in the country.
The quarter final against Athlone was a close affair with Tralee coming out 5 point winners thanks to a massive effort from all 5 players on defence and 12 points from Emily Flynn, 10 from Ciara Costello and 6 from Sophie Mitchell.
The Premier division semi-final placed Tralee against Dublin side Tolka Rovers who were favourites coming into the tournament. Despite a slow start which saw Tralee behind 13-7 at the end of the 1st an outstanding display of defensive controlled aggression saw the girls keep Tolka scoreless in the 2nd with Tralee going in 1 point up at the half. The introduction of u14 player Abby Crowley pivotal in Tralee's massive defensive energy.
The 2nd half was neck in neck right up until the final 3 minutes with Tralee leaving blood sweat and tears on the court. Tolka able to utilise a much bigger squad went on a late run and Tralee out on their feet just couldn't respond. Tolka running out 33 to 19 winners.
Massive credit to all 8 girls who fought tooth and nail all weekend. The team first mentality clearly evident from the scoring spread which saw Irish international and Captian Priya O Donavan and Ciara Costello finish joint 10th place in tournament scoring with 10 ppg followed by Emily Flynn with 9.6ppg and Sophie Mitchell with 6.3ppg. Massive criedit also to Shauna Kirby who was immense on defence and rebounding all weekend and chipped in with 1.6 ppg.
The future is definitely bright for this group with 4 u16s, 2 u15s and 2 u14s getting minutes in the semi-final.
